Questions people ask

How does the page work out how long my money lasts?
It runs your balance month by month: it adds the return on what stays invested and takes out your monthly withdrawal. Once a year the withdrawal rises by the percentage you set, and the count stops when the balance runs out.
What is the Withdrawal That Lasts Your Target?
It is the starting monthly withdrawal, rising each year by the same percentage, that brings the balance to zero at the end of the number of years you want it to last.
What does First Year Withdrawal Rate show?
It is your first year of withdrawals, twelve times the monthly amount, divided by the starting balance.
Why might real results differ from this projection?
The page uses one average return, which hides the order in which returns arrive. That order matters most in the first years of drawing down.
