Questions people ask

How does the page work out my take-home pay?
It starts from your annual gross salary, takes off federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, state and local tax, your 401(k) or 403(b) contribution, health premiums and other after-tax deductions, then divides the result by your number of paychecks a year.
Why does my 401(k) lower income tax but not Social Security and Medicare?
The page treats 401(k) or 403(b) contributions as lowering income tax but not FICA, and health premiums as lowering both, as the field notes say. So the same dollar in each has a different effect on your paycheck.
How are state and local taxes calculated?
You enter each as a flat percentage, and the page applies it to your pay after before-tax deductions. Several states use brackets, so enter your effective rate for a closer number.
Which tax year does the federal figure use?
The Calculated On line shows the year of the federal brackets the page applies. The Marginal Bracket line shows the federal rate on your last dollar of taxable income.
