Questions people ask

How is total ROI calculated?
The page adds the current or sale value to the income received, subtracts the amount invested plus additional costs, and divides that net gain by the total cost.
What is the difference between total ROI and the annualized return?
Total ROI is the gain over the whole holding period. The annualized return (CAGR) is the steady yearly rate that turns the total cost into the total value received over the years you enter, so you can compare holdings of different lengths.
What should I put in Additional Costs?
Anything you paid on top of the purchase price, such as fees, taxes or improvements. Leaving them out makes the return look higher than it was.
Why does the annualized return show n/a?
It needs a holding period above zero and a positive total cost and value. Enter the number of years you held the investment to see it.
