Business Credit From Zero: The Six-Month Sequence That Works

Business Credit From Zero: The Six-Month Sequence That Works

Guide for owners of a new LLC or corporation. Updated September 5, 2026.

Every week someone on r/smallbusiness asks the same thing: "I have an EIN. How do I get business credit that does not touch my personal score?" The short answer is that you can build a separate business credit file in about six months, but the first business credit card will ask for your personal guarantee anyway. Here is the sequence that works, what each step costs (nothing, for most of them), and the two shortcuts people sell that you should skip.

What "business credit" is

Your personal file lives at Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. A business file lives at Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business and Equifax Business. Lenders and suppliers look at a business file when they decide on net terms, equipment leases and lines of credit. The best-known score is D&B's PAYDEX, which runs 1 to 100; an 80 means you pay invoices on time, above 80 means early.

The file only exists once someone reports to it. That is the whole game: get a few accounts that report, pay them early, repeat.

The order of operations

  1. Form the entity and get the EIN. The EIN is free and instant on the IRS site. Anyone charging for it is reselling a free form.
  2. Open a business checking account under the entity's name. Banks and later lenders want to see the business pay for things from its own account. Mixing personal and business money is also how owners lose liability protection.
  3. Get a D-U-N-S number. Free from Dun & Bradstreet; allow up to 30 days. Decline the paid "credit builder" upsell on the way out.
  4. Make the business findable. A phone number listed under the business name, a matching address on the state filing, the bank account and the D&B record. Lenders run automated matching; mismatched addresses are the most common reason an application dies without a rejection letter.
  5. Open three net-30 vendor accounts that report. Office and industrial suppliers are the classic starting point because they extend small net-30 terms to new companies and report payments to D&B or Experian Business. Buy things you would buy anyway, pay the invoice within a week, repeat monthly. Confirm in writing that the vendor reports; some do not.
  6. After three to six months of reported payments, apply for a business credit card. Most cards from the big issuers pull your personal credit and require a personal guarantee. Some report only to business bureaus, which keeps the balance off your personal utilization. Ask the issuer which bureaus they report to before you apply.
  7. Add a business line of credit or equipment financing when revenue supports it. Reported, revolving business credit is what moves the file from "exists" to "bankable."

The personal guarantee question

A personal guarantee means that if the business cannot pay, you pay. For a company under two years old with no reported history, almost every card and loan will require one. That is normal. What you are building toward is the point where the business file carries enough weight that some lenders drop the guarantee, and the cards that report only to business bureaus stop affecting your personal score in the meantime.

Two things to skip

  • "Shelf corporations" and aged entities. Buying an old LLC to borrow its age is treated as fraud by lenders and by bureaus, and a bureau that spots it can close the file.
  • Tradeline packages. Paying a stranger to add your business as an authorized user on their account produces a file that lenders' fraud models flag. The vendors selling these disappear when the file gets frozen.

Timeline you can expect

  • Month 0 to 1: entity, EIN, bank account, D-U-N-S, listings.
  • Month 1 to 4: three reporting vendor accounts, paid early every month.
  • Month 4 to 6: first business card (expect a personal guarantee), PAYDEX appears.
  • Month 6 to 12: a line of credit or equipment financing; the file becomes something a lender will read.

Comparing lenders? The Banrox loan marketplace shows business financing options side by side, and the calculators turn a rate into a real monthly payment before you apply. Your personal file still matters for the guarantee, so keep your three-bureau monitor running while the business file grows.
